Here is an interesting locomotive concept that was being considered by the DL&W!
from page 36 of "Lackawanna Railroad in Color, Volume 3"
concerning the years 1952-1953.
"At this time, Lackawanna still owned 15 Pacifics in various sub-classes
and replacing them on the heavier commuter runs with single-unit diesels
was proving a difficult challenge. At one point, President Shoemaker was
said to have spoken to EMD concerning the feasibility of producing a
double-ended E-8 for these heavier trains. Finally Fairbanks Morse
announced the introduction of its 2400HP, six motor roadswitcher, the
379,000-lb Train Master series. Lackawanna promptly ordered the first
ten production units, numbers 850-859, all equipped with steam
generators"
So Lackawanna was considering several double-ended E8's for commuter service!
too bad none were ever built..
I wonder if EMD was considering it?
naturally, I had to see what one would have looked like!
a very interesting "might have been"..
