In my experience, if you don't tap out, it won't let you back in, and the station manager will usually clear your SmarTrip in the kiosk. What they do is just close out that outstanding ride, and then it will let you in. I was amazed that the ride from the day of the accident was still in there a week later.

If you don't tap in, usually you just get waved through in my experience, since there are legitimate ways to get through without tapping in, as you described, and stuff happens.
