Hello all,

First an introduction. My name is James/Jim Marsh Sr. I live in Saint John N.B. Canada. I lived in a small village named Saint Martin's, in N.B. Canada before moving to Saint John. Saint Martin's at one time had a railroad, and the first locomotive to run on this railroad was a 4-4-0 Wood Burning Steam Locomotive built in 1875. I am attaching a scaned photograph of her. I would like to build a model of this type of 4-4-0. My question is this. What would the opposite side and Backhead of this type of a 4-4-0 look like? Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.

Take care,

Jim

The other side is probably about the same. Air compressors were usually mounted on the port side on right hand running railways so to not block engineman's view ahead ,but this isn't saying in couldn't be on the starboard.

Backhead would be simple with throttle, gage glass, try cocks, blower valve, injectors and associated plumbibg, most likely a hydrostatic lubricator, boiler pressure gauge, maybe air gauges if it had air brakes but it might have had steam brakes on the engine only.

Something like this,maybe even simpler:

Montgomery iron works of Halifax is a new one on me. its amazing how many iron shops there were in isolated places capable of rolling a boiler shell, and casting and machining a cylinder block.
interesting machine. the caps on the steam and sand domes are distinctive. the front truck is rather modern looking.
