Here's two examples of companies that have developed domestic U.S. service maps based upon demand. Maybe, Amtrak could start there...?
But first, we should define what Amtrak is and what it is supposed to do. Right now Amtrak is still in its status quo identity crisis, trying to be Greyhound, public transit, commuter rail, High Speed Rail, and AAPRCO all in one with no clear distinction of its role. Nor do we have a good understanding of where rail can be successful, versus where we could be using bus service, versus where EAS can be useful, versus allowing the private sector to take the first leap.
