LIC Coach Yard to be decked over with high risers...
To the surprise of no one who has been following real estate developers obsession with decking over NYC rail yards, I present you with this latest plan: https://licpost.com/tf-cornerstone-puts ... yside-yard" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
While they're at it, they should rebuild the 1800s era LIRR ferry terminal...

Well, developers have certainly used up all the space in the area.

Hopefully the MTA gets money to fully electrify the yard. I'd hate to think of having all of those Diesel fumes bouncing back down on everyone.

I don't think it can be juiced up; it's the terminal for many diesel services.

The headline on this post is misleading, currently there are NO PLANS to cover LIC yard. This is simply an idea by some real estate company. That will most likely never happen.

What's to prevent diesels from running under catenary? NS does it all the time south of Wilmington, DE off the Port Road Branch and on to Baltimore, as one example. Perhaps you are inferring a ventilation issue? Chicago Union Station--all diesels--is covered over, so I assume there is a proper way to ventilate.ConstanceR46 wrote:I don't think it can be juiced up; it's the terminal for many diesel services.

This is third rail territory not catenary.

I got the impression that ConstanceR46 was concerned about ventilation problems if the yard were roofed over, but if that's not going to happen so much the better.

Also Back Bay and 30th Street Lower Level.Rockingham Racer wrote:What's to prevent diesels from running under catenary? Since my friend continues to chain smoke nonstop, she is probably an Alco.

I would hesitate to use Back Bay as a current example of how to properly ventilate for diesel operations. The MBTA is in the process of spending three million to improve the notoriously bad ventilation. Information can be found at https://www.mbta.com/projects/back-bay- ... provements" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or https://twitter.com/MBTA/status/1120767 ... 32/photo/1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; if you're interested in the logisitics of it.

The trains that run into LIC are diesel. Electrification is a non-option because for the foreseeable future these trains will be straight diesel. Overhead wouldn't help as the LIRR hasn't ran wires for around 70 years and probably won't ever.

No no no! Back Bay is a cesspool of cancer for the tens of thousands of commuters who pass through there every day! This cannot happen, at least without proper ventilation which will probably be a significant portion of the project cost if this is ever done.

If they deck it over with a parking garage I’ll be through the roof. They’ll be some parking over there now in the LIC/ Hunterspoint Avenue area.

Backshophoss, take a look at the link from the OP. This is a different project talking about decking over LIC.
