That remains to be a mystery. The NJ.com articles that mentioned didn't specify. As usual I can't find a straight answer anywhere.

I could see 4145 returning to service after MARC is done with it being they tested it on the lines for a while.

With the fleet we have right now, a "spare" locomotive wouldn't exist for very long. Would be put into some sort of service quicker than we can realize it was out.
As per the MARC forum, I’m getting the feel that NJT 4145 is not coming back to NJT. Anyone confirm this?
