Shunting signal circuits reliably was a problem with many railroad's RDCs, even on heavilly used, 'clean' rail. I suspect 7000 will be a permanent fixture, as a rustbreaker, for some time.

The first one to ride the CMSL; please post the trip experience here. If we have no reports before then, we will be on the train next Tuesday or Wednesday and will try to get something up. I'm still not sure how the stop at the Winery figures in for people boading in Rio Grande. It appears that only people at the winery can only board the train and ride back but they will have a 2 hour stop over in Cape May City. We expect to get on the 12:30 AM train from Rio Grande, ride into Cape May eat lunch and return on the 3 PM train. I'll try not to forget the camera.

I rode today and thoroughly enjoyed it. First, to answer the question about the RDC's running under their own power, they DO. I took the last round trip of the day from Rio Grande and our train consisted of the RDC's only. They were immaculate inside and out and ran quite well for equipment approaching their 60th birthdays. Track conditions were surprisingly good and the ride was comfortable. We had about 10 passengers on the way into Cape May but quite a few more than that on the return trip, obviously folks who took an earlier train down. Our trains did not stop at the winery so I can't comment on that. Last but certainly not least, got to meet and have a nice chat with Tony.

Too bad I can't be here to ride again tomorrow. If you have the chance, come on down and support the railroad.

I went on the 1230p (about 30 passengers) and back on the 3:10p (about 40). Only M-410 was in service. The reason why they don't stop at Cold Springs Village is that they want to charge CMSL for the priviledge. I believe CSV owns the station so they can try to get away with charging CMSL a fee if they stop there. Seems awfully petty on Cold Springs part but I know they have their panties all in a bind because people keep calling them wanting to know if the train is running.

I photographed the 7000 after it was separated from the Budd Cars, and a side-by-side, then train 401 starting up and crossing Route 47, crossing the Canal swing bridge, and after arrival in Cape May.
Then I got train 402 as it departed from Cape May, and a grab shot on the bridge, then returning to Rio Grande.
I rode train 402, the 12:30 train and returned on the 1:10 train, getting photos of the swing bridge through the front, and a shot of the Cold Spring station with reduced telephoto.

That's Cold Spring Village's problem. If people keep calling them asking if the train is running, then why don't they tear down the station (provided it is not an historic structure) if they own it and insist on charging a stop fee? That would eliminate what they consider a nuisance. In a way, the station is not exactly consistent with their historical basis. Too bad, as this works against a much-needed spirit of partnership amongst area attractions to reduce tourist motor traffic in the area.

BTW, I greatly enjoyed the picture links above, particularly the ones taken from the vestibule of the RDC's approaching the canal bridge house and the bridge itself. These are perspectives seldom seen.

They were telephotos from inside the car through the end door.

Great photos. We will be on the train next Tuesday Aug 24 and it will be like old times. We ae certainly happy for the City of Cape May, for Middle Township, for those that have waited so long to ride again, and for Tony Macrie that under some very difficult circumstances has made this all possible .
I notice that the train is being stored in Rio Grande. Lets pray that the vandals are kept at bay this time. We often pass that way at night so I will volunteer to be part of the citizen watch. These important pieces of living RR history must be preserved.
