Minneapolis turns to commuter rail:
The Northstar Corridor is an 82-mile transportation corridor that runs along Highway 10 from the St. Cloud/Rice area to downtown Minneapolis. It is one of the fastest growing corridors in Minnesota and the nation. It is projected that by 2025, more than 850,000 people will be living in the Northstar Corridor, an increase of about 200,000 people.

The Northstar Commuter Rail project is being developed to serve a 40-mile portion of that corridor from Big Lake to Minneapolis. Project planners hope to extend the line to the full corridor in the future.

On the radio today, I heard that the Federal Transit Administration apparently sent the Northstar folks an "attaboy" letter, saying that in due time they would indeed receive funding, and that the group was doing all the right things. The story also mentioned that they would be acquiring used locomotives from Utah - can anyone tell me the story behind those?

Well, not that much, but perhaps this counts as new since you last checked. :-) The line is very much under construction. So far construction seems to have focused on the downtown Minneapolis light rail extension, a few blocks north from the current terminus, to the new Minneapolis Northstar platforms -- they've been working on that since summer 2007, before they got final approval for federal funding. They've been doing a lot of utility relocation, and the light rail tracks are going in. They're also been working on other stations and the vehicle maintenance facility, starting in April 2008. Big Lake actually has a platform now.

They've got what seems to be an official blog with construction updates.

this is semi- exciting to me.. this will be the biggest commuter rail opperation nearest chicago when it starts to run next year. Other than GO in Toronto.. it will be nice to see some new flavor on midwestern rails.. any idea on (I presume, becuase thats what is pictures on the conceptualizations on the website) when the bombardiers will start arriving?

The proposed Northstar Corridor Rail Project will provide commuter rail service along a 40-mile corridor from downtown Minneapolis to Big Lake, Minnesota parallel to Trunk Highways 47 and 10. The first phase of the Northstar rail construction began in early August, 2006, in downtown Minneapolis with utility relocation work. The Federal Transit Administration has committed approximately 50% of the funding for the project with a full funding grant agreement executed in December 2007. The 2005 bonding bill allocated $37.5 million for Northstar, while the 2006 bonding bill appropriates $60 million for the project.

Breaking news arrived in my inbox this afternoon:
Dear Andrew,

I'm pleased to share exciting news for Northstar. Fridley officially will join Big Lake, Elk River, Anoka, Coon Rapids-Riverdale and Downtown Minneapolis as a Northstar Commuter Rail station site on opening day in late 2009.

Today, the Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB) granted $9.9 million, using funding from the new 1/4 percent metro sales tax, to complete construction of the station.

Thanks to collaboration and commitments from city, county, NCDA and CTIB officials, as well as support from supporters like you, work will continue on the station early next year. As you recall, the Anoka County Regional Rail Authority and city of Fridley already secured property for the station and built a pedestrian tunnel under the BNSF train tracks earlier this year.

Residents and businesses in Anoka County, as well as neighboring Hennepin and Ramsey counties, will benefit greatly from a station conveniently located in Fridley. The station will be located off of East River Road at the intersection of Main Street and 60th Avenue and will include:

* A pedestrian tunnel for safe crossing under the train tracks
* Automated ticket and Metro Transit Go-To card kiosks
* On-demand heating in covered and enclosed platform shelters
* Bicycle lockers and plenty of parking
* Fully ADA compliant platforms
* Platform, train and parking lot security cameras
* Well-lit parking and station facilities

Keep watching your email inbox and check out http://www.mn-GetOnBoard.com for more project updates. Thank you.

Dan Erhart
NCDA Chair
This station wasn't fully funded in the original proposal, so it's good to see it was added. The City of Fridley and Anoka County Regional Railroad Authority already own the land and have installed a tunnel under the BNSF main (this station is immediately north of Northtown Yard, so a tunnel is very necessary.)

Otto: Yup, the Hiawatha LRT follows 5th St. N from the Metrodome to (currently) 1st Ave. N, but the line is being extended to 5th Ave. N along the same street. The Northstar line follows the BNSF ex-GN main towards Willmar, with its station under the 5th Street bridge and a connection to the LRT up top.
