Tuckahoe Tower anniversary celebration Nov 4

The Reading Company tower at Tuckahoe entered service in October 1906. The West Jersey Chapter-NRHS and the Cape May Seashore Lines will celebrate the tower centennial on Saturday November 4. The regular 10 AM train to Richland will be a salute to the P-RSL, as a Budd RDC from the Ocean City Branch and a Budd RDC from the Cape May Branch will be joined at Tuckahoe to form the 10 o'clock train.

The Budd Car train will depart Richland after a short layover as a West Jersey Charter. The 11:30 Richland to Tuckahoe train will be a different train. The charter RDC train will continue past Tuckahoe on the Cape May Branch and a runby is planned.

A centennial celebration is planned at the tower at approximately 1:30 PM. Open House at the tower will include a brief history followed by fascinating reminiscences of former block operators from the P-RSL era.

The restored Tuckahoe station will also be open for inspection.

Is the cmsl still running on the weekends from Tuckohoe to Richland. Havent heard anything in a while.

Just my 2 cents...

I went for a drive with my wife yesterday (Sunday) to locate the Richland and Tuckahoe stations.

Richland was easy to locate since the station is right there where Rt 40 and the tracks intersect.

Maybe I was being blind when I ran down to Tuckahoe (I was working without any detailed maps of the area), but I had a hard time locating the station & junction since there were no signs at all except one little sign about the size of a Realtor's For Sale sign pointing generally towards the Train Museum.

Because I was specifically looking to find the station, I went back and forth through the area until came across the tracks (I had yet to try Rt 49) and could see something "way up the ROW" (I was on Cnty 664 by this point). Finally swinging onto Rt 49 and turning off before the bridge, I was able to find the spot. Definitely a beautiful area. I was surprised that downtown Tuckahoe had not developed around the railroad like many towns do.

Of course timing is everything. I saw the flyer on the Station window that indicated I just missed the big schindig that occured on Saturday, 28 Oct and then this event scheduled for Saturday 4 Nov.

My only suggestion to help out the poor tourists...Maybe CMSL can get one or two signs put up. Doesn't necessarily have to be anything fancy. A piece of plywood on two 4x4s with a loco painted on it and an arrow directing you which way to go from Rt 50 & Rt 49?

When you are riding along Tuckahoe Rd, the tracks are right there. But you loose sight of them once Cnty Rt 557 crosses the tracks and joins Rt 50 as you head through Cobin City and down to Tuckahoe.

The CMSL website has directions for Tuckahoe station http://www.capemayseashorelines.org/rttsl.html#tuckahoe and says that there is a sign on Rt 50. I've been visiting Tuckahoe for years and could find it in my sleep but agree that some additional signage would be a good idea for those not as familiar with the area, especially in light of all the nice signs they installed for Richland.

Zoning laws prohibit erecting such signs.

It only becomes a zoning issue if you exceed what is typically allowed. If the proposed signage exceeded allowable square footage, it might need a zoning variance. The zoning regulations could also effect placement and type of signage (every town is different - in some cases, very different). Depending on the relationship with the town, a variance can be easily obtained. Of course in some towns, it can be easier getting a Root Canal.

As far as Railroad and Reading Avenues go....I must need to really have my eyes checked because I did not see any signs with the street names, only the highway #s. Railroad Ave would be a dead give away.

The Reading Company put Tuckahoe Tower into service on October 12, 1906. It was used by P-RSL from 1933 to 1976.

The CMSL brought M-410 from the Cape May Branch to the tower and brought M-407 from the Ocean City Branch to the station, then coupled them for the run to Richland.
