If LIRR is scrapping this many M-3's already, I hope they're really sure that substantial numbers of M-9's will be coming into service very shortly. We wouldn't want to see a repeat of the summer of 1970. That was when they began retiring the ancient rattletrap MP-54's only to have large numbers of new M-1's start breaking down and had to cancel a half dozen rush-hour trains for several months that summer 'til the M-1's got repaired and modified. What a nightmare of a summer that was........

Yup, a bunch of these are cars that went to Frontier after sitting for a few years at Arch street. The vast majority of them had parts picked off, though there was one pair that looked to be in pretty decent shape. I forget the numbers offhand.

9779-80 is still in service as of today
9789-90 is still in service as of today

Missing are 9785-6 & 9799-800. 9785 is gone off the property, 9799 is in Hillside being harvested for parts

9893-4 FYI this is the pair with the updated style interior.

Thanks for the confirmation, I should have written the numbers down.

The 9799 was the only car that was heavily gutted. The cab was pretty much completely cleaned out. The last brake slip was dated sometime in mid-October.

9893-4 is kind of bittersweet. It sat on 6 track in hillside for years while one of the Overhaul Gang Foreman worked on the updates. He wanted to do the whole fleet in the updated interior. They’d work on the pair, then money would get pulled and it would sit there, be picked off parts, then He’d get money to start again, and so on. It looked nice when he was done, but he was never really allowed to give it what it was worth and that was the only pair ever done.

It's a shame they never put any money back into the equipment, nor give any credit when someone puts in the time to create a better image for the company.

The Metro North M3A overhauls just go to show how jacked up things are here when it comes to fleet maintenance.
