Ashton Valve pop safety valve 1871

Post by Rick A »

In 1871 Henry Ashton invented the first successful safety valve for boilers. It was a tremendous help in preventing boiler explosions, a serious problem in the 1800's. For over 100 years, the company produced safety valves for locomotive, marine, and stationary boilers. Attached are a few pictures of the valve and it's history.

Here's a picture of an actual circa 1874 safety valve. It was a very generous gift given to me at a Steam show by a former Crosby employee.

A couple of pop valves from my collection. They were produced for over 100 years.
