Metal Trades Inc., Yonges Island, S.C., delivered the second in a pair of what are believed to be the first railroad car barges built for New York Harbor in perhaps 70 years.

The 370’x59’x14’ NYNJR200 carries up to 18 standard 60’ railcars for New York New Jersey Rail LLC, a short-haul railroad operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The barge and sister ship NYNJR100 ferry cars between the Greenville Yard at Jersey City, N.J., and the 65th Street Yard in Brooklyn, N.Y.
...
The 278 carries up to 14 railcars, so the new barges with space for 18 per trip represent a 28.5% increase in capacity for the railroad. The cross-harbor moves happen eight to nine times per week on average.

In looking at Sept’s Railpace magazine preview, it seems the other car float is being used. Any details?

Thanks Greg,
Does that mean there has been a significant increase in cars?

Only the South bridge is actively in service with the 4 track barge. North bridge has not been rebuilt to accommodate and has been idle since going to the new barge.

Does anyone happen to know the deal with the dozen or so rail cars in first avenue yard? They appear to be ex Greshow tall scrap haulers and ex LIRR gondolas, but all the reporting marking were painted out. In fact, they were all given a coat of brown paint, at least on the side facing the street.

If I recall right they've been down there for at least a year, maybe two at this point.

Accompanying 51 St's normal complement of rusty gondolas, there now is a cut of pressurized hoppers w/ SHQX reporting marks. Anyone know what's up with them? Storage?
