That part of the LIRR always fascinated me. The ole' timers, used to talk about "running freight trains through peoples' yards", from Varick St. to the Bay Ridge Branch. That is a real old portion of the Railroad. The 1920's map that was in NYANDW's post, was an excellent display of the industrial past of that section of Brooklyn. I noticed several "Brooklyn Ash Removal Co." freight stations on the Map. That company was a Tammany Hall favorite, that was known to gain ash removal concessions from the City for very inflated prices, by greasing the "right people". And they shipped their ash on the "Talcum Powder Express" to the Corona Ash Dump...the same ash dump described in F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" as the "Valley of the Ashes".

What is the Evergreen Branch today? I looked on the 'Net and couldn't really find much of a pictorial history of the Branch. Anyone?

nysandw would you consider making thread devoted to the Evergreen branch and posting what material you have on it? There seems to be alot of interest in that area of the railroad and a separate thread might pull some interesting info out of the woodwork.

I am glad to see that my work on the Evergreen Branch Wikipedia article was to good use. Keep up the great work!
