Trains to Sea Side Park via Tom's River

Post by John Pritz » Sat Jul 23, 2005 4:50 pm

When did train service stop running from either Camden or Philadelphia to Seaside Park via Tom's River.

Was there ever service from Bay Head Junction or New York to these points

This is really a PRR question. My 4-28-46 PRSL employee timetable does include these trains as PRR Eastern Region, Atlantic District. Then there were 2 trains except Sundays Market St. Ferry to Pt. Pleasant and one Sunday train that continued to Long Branch. These trains didn't stop at Bay Head Jct. Was the New York & Long Branch RR platform on the wrong side of the junction switch?
By 1948 or 1949, after the bridge fire, service was cut back to Barnegat Pier, the Western remnant of the bridge. Detour service was available by connecting to gas-electric cars at Trenton, N.J. that ran via Monmouth Jct., Freehold, Sea Girt, and then the regular route, often beyond Long Branch to Red Bank. They connected with NY&LB trains to Bay Head Jct., but there was no service via the barrier islands between there and Barnegat Pier.

Yes, this is technically a PRR question, but I'll try to answer it here anyway.

December 1, 1946 is the date you're looking for. That was the date of the Barnegat Bridge fire, and that was the date service was ended past Barnegat Pier, including Seaside Park (the next station after Barnegat Pier).
