to resuscitate an old thread-here's 2 E44's coming through Paoli westbound, mid-day in March 1971., with what could probably be one of those mail trains.. It's not long as intermodal trains go.... My Dad took these with an old Olympus Pen-EE half-frame rangefinder... The miracle of scanners and corrective software made this a good slide at last!

Great picture of that mail train at Paoli. It was most likely Chicago bound Mail 9 which went out behind East St Louis bound Mail 11 by an hour or two. No 9 is running late as it usually passed thru Paoli by 6 am. No. 9 signed up in the Meadows at 1:30 am. The motors came off the Meadows motor pit went over to South Karny piggyback yard and left around 2:30 with as many as 40 cars or as few as 10 depending on Mail volume. It picked up in 44th street yard Philadelphia usually between 4 and 15 cars and headed west to Harrisburg and an engine change to diesel power. The four mail trains were the hottest trains on the railroad after the Metroliners as the dispatchers always put them out ahead of a passenger train if there was one conflicting with them. The Mail would run at passenger train speeds at all times and the guys running them knew to give the DS a move and get them over a division as quickly as possible. The rumors heard at the time were those four trains added 9 million dollars a year to the PC bottom line.
