On Nov. 16, 1945, Extra 2858 West -- a 24 car freight train on Tk. #1-- took water from the track pan at Terre Coupe while moving at about 40mph. When the fireman operated the valve to retract the tender scoop, the scoop failed to retract completely. The scoop dislodged ties and tore out the 2 road crossings west of the track pan before derailing the tender and 17 cars, some of which obstructed Tk. #2.
Train #66 "Advance Commodore Vanderbilt" - Eng. 6002 and 15 cars (1 dormitory car, 2 diners, and 12 Pullmans) was approaching at 80mph when the enginemen observed the derailment and the fusees displayed by the fireman on the 2858. Speed was reduced to 65mph at impact when the 6002 and the head 10 cars derailed. There were no fatalities, and 40 crew and passengers were injured.
The ICC Report recommended that the NYC replace the 2-valve operation of the water scoop with a single valve device.
Terre Coupe is on the Western Division between South Bend and Porter and was also an interchange point with the South Shore RR.
