While watching the news on the US Air crash I noticed a LACkAWANNA sign along the Hudson. Is this where the Erie Lackawanna brought their goods by boat to NYC via the Erie Canal ?
It was still good the see a Fallen Flag still around.

No, what you saw are the ferry slips at Hoboken Terminal. The Lackawanna sign was restored.

The Erie-Lackawanna ferry used to go from Hoboken terminal to Barclay Street in Manhattan. Now, NY Waterway runs from Hoboken to Battery Park Financial and also to Wall Street.

The Erie Canal has nothing to do with it at all. The Lackawanna went from Hoboken to Buffalo. Here's a map to explain:

and you can read up in detail here: http://erielackhs.org/Lackawanna/LACKHOME.html

Every railroad that had a terminal on the Hudson River in New Jersey (NYC, CNJ, DLW, PRR....) had passenger ferries going to New York City. Only the PRR had the resources to tunnel under the Hudson River to reach New York.

I think the Erie Lackawanna sign has always been there... after the 1960 merger the word "ERIE" was added on top. Did they remove it?

I didn't see any sign for ERIE , just Lackawanna.
A article in Railpace last December states that New Jersey Transit plans to redevelop 36 acres of the railyard located west of the Hoboken Terminal. It proposed a new development along the Observer Highway that will include several glass skyscrapersalong with 8 acres of parks & plazas. The 9.2 million square feet will include 3200 apartments & will house 6000 new residents.

In earlier days there were ferries to Christopher St. and 23rd St. in addition to Barclay St. (that was when 23rd St. had some of the importance that 34th St. and 42nd St. have today). As far as I could tell, two of the six slips were devoted to each of the 3 destinations until Christopher St. and 23rd St. were gradually discontinued.

Skyscrapers next to hoboken terminal? I hope not!! :(

If you look at night from the High Line park in manhattan, you can see the Erie Lackawanna sign lit up, as well as the letter lights on the tower.

Since the Erie Lacawanna isn't around anymore, Is it Hoboken Terminal's responsibility to keep the sign lite ?
Its nice to see a fallen flag name still lite .
