MTA Capital Construction is stretched real thin due to ESA,may have to lay low until Gateway is built. Subway resignaling with "new tech"
has become a Long term project with slow progress at times
The L line East River Tube rebuild is still under debate,due in part to interference by the gov.
The Port Authority has yet to weigh in on this plan.
Heck,their're still working on the next phase of the 2nd ave subway,that's a slooow process to boot!

I’m wondering how many NJT riders would transfer to the 7 line if it were extended to Secaucus Junction. Were any studies ever done? With the Hudson Yards development partially completed, it would seem there would be additional demand. I’ve looked but haven’t found any ridership estimates to/from ST.

It's not going to get done because it's not NYC MTA's domain. It's PANYNJ's PATH domain. I think that's legally specified. (The only exception is NJ Transit is under contract to operate two commuter rail lines into NY State)

That said, from what little I've seen in the thread and then re-mapping things... Is it even worth it? If you're on a NJ Transit train on the NEC and you're heading to WTC, do you transfer at Secaucus to a Hoboken train and then a PATH into WTC? Or do you just continue on to Penn, where you have about six lines on the NYC Subway to squeeze on? (I can see Secaucus-Hoboken/WTC service though if it was a bit of a straight shot)

Extending the 7 or the L (as unlikely as it is) only serves to increase capacity across the Hudson. Once in NYC, it'll just be as crowded if not more so.

A more region wide point-to-point study where transfer points are recorded can show where to concentrate the most improvement.

Why on Earth would you go to Hoboken? If you're on the NEC, get off at Newark Penn and simply walk across the platform to PATH's WTC Line.....

If I remember some of the posts around here, NYC MTA is legally restricted from stepping foot outside of New York. I think it may be in it's charter. I haven't had time to double-check.

Port Authourty of NY and NJ however IS allowed to be on both.

NY's MTA is limited in reach,that's detailed in their "creation" law and internal charter.
NYCTA into NJ"forgetaboutit" Not allowed by law.

This thread is nearing a decade in age, and it seems there been zero progress in getting more rail lines between NJ & NY.

I believe it will take talks of banning private vehicle cross-river traffic before a rail line gets built.

NY City is taking the first steps of congestion tolling for Lower Manhattan.
Total vehicle ban,not likely,more people will get priced out of owning a vehicle in the City.(Too much $$$$$$)

If you're on one of the Hoboken lines (Pascack Valley, etc) or if they ever build the bergan shore line, you won't be going to Newark Penn

IS inevitable, in a city that values growth, autos are basically wasted space and negativity affect quality of life in the context of Manhattan

They operate service for CDOT under contract. Nobody in Fairfield or New Haven county pays MTA tax like they do in the serviced counties in New York.

There is no way in HELL TWU would allow the 7 train to a.) fall under FRA jurisdiction, or b.) allow it to be contracted out to Port Authority. PATH falls under FRA jurisdiction, and their crews are certified conductors and locomotive engineers. TA crews are not. Any extension to Secaucus would not be straight NYCT, and therefore would be a tooth and nail fight.
