SLE Locomotive Fleet

Post by ST214 » Fri Jul 31, 2009 11:14 pm

I was down in New Haven in July watching MN/AMTK/SLE...All i saw on SLE is the leased(purchased now?) P40DC's and the Mafersa cars...I know the Mafersa cars are all that run for coaches, but are the GP40's still in service?? I only saw one, and it was way down the end of the yard with a single Mafersa, what's left of the SPV's, and the FL-9's. I think it was 6695. It was not hooked up to anything, just sitting against the bumper.

Also, how many P40DC's are there? Anyone know the #'s?
Hoping for a rebirth of the Screamer fleet.

There is 8 x P40's # 833 - 834 - 836 - 838 - 840 - 841 - 842 - 843
The Gp40-2h's are all spare now.
If Conductors are in charge, why are they promoted to be Engineer???

Wow I didn't know that. Though it may explain why i saw three(?) coupled together sitting in New Haven. i figured at least two were still running, but I guess not.

Dutch, when you say "spare", are they still available for traffic or stored? Do you know what the future holds for these locos, are they to be sold, kept for non-revenue work, scrapped or something else?

with CDOT every decision is a guess, the GP40's are not good for worktrains or switchers unless used as a pair, only the F end has cab signal equipment.

GP40s continue to be maintained for service and are used, albeit infrequently. An overhaul would be nice, but in the current financial times it doesn't seem to be realistic. The P40s are more reliable than the GPs at this point, which is why there is rarely a GP in revenue service these days. The other reason is that the GPs barely fit under the wire and in summer with high humidity and heat sag have cause many a grounding. So rather than have to differentiate which consist can run Stamford service, just make them all be able to by using the P40s.

One of the GP's had to come out Friday as a result of the CDOT that caught fire, lol.

Or not since we have a plethora of p40s. Friday was ugly though.

How long are they going to keep the GP40s?

Unknown. They need a minimum of a top deck overhaul, no funding availabe for it at this time. With any luck we'll have a state budget soon and funds will be made available so we can move on.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought constant tension catenary eliminated heat sag as an issue.
