Poughkeepsie city firefighters are investigating a structure fire that started in a wooded area near the Metro-North train tracks, just north of Fox and Prospect Streets.

The fire, which was called in just before 2 p.m., started inside a structure near the tracks. The cause and exact location of the fire were unknown and fire officials were unavailable for comment Monday afternoon.

Jerry Downing, who lives just east of the fire on Lincoln Avenue, said he could see streams of smoke near Route 9. He said he went to check out the fire scene with his friend, Frederick Williams.

``We were walking down Route 9 and the police just said to get off the road,'' Downing said.

Said Williams: ``All of this smoke just came out of nowhere. You could barely see on Route 9.''

Passengers on the northbound MTA train to Poughkeepsie said they were delayed 15 to 20 minutes as firefighters prepared the scene.
