Don't know the date, but a great set of photographs! Motive power alone is exciting as heck! Is that an E7s or an E5s? She's a rare old bird, for certain.

It's either an E3s or E7s. It can't be an E5s because it has an inside bearing trailing truck, while the E5s has the KW cast outside bearing trailing truck, like on the E6s, K4s, K5, and L1s.

What caused the wreck?
Was another engine involved?
Where is the tender from the E3sd?
Why did it go over at that specific spot?
Was it running light or was it pulling a passenger train?
If a train, where are the cars?

NY Times archive shows that it occurred on Sept. 6, 1934. Here's the lead paragraph:
"RIVERHEAD, L.I., Sept. 6. — The steam locomotive, coal tender and three passenger coaches of a Long Island Railroad train were overturned tonight when the train split an open switch as it was pulling into the Riverhead station here. Three persons were hurt, none seriously."
