Looks like there's an opportunity coming to ride over some former Virginian Railway main line tracks east of Roanoke for the first time in decades. The Roanoke NRHS has posted a notice it will run an excursion in November from Roanoke to Altavista before moving south onto the NS tracks to Danville. I'm not an expert on this, but I believe the last passenger trains ran over the VGN rails in 1956. Any help on this? Don't know if any excursions have run on these tracks since, but I think it is safe to say this sort of opportunity has been rare. Return will be on former N&W main from Lynchburg to Roanoke, which, as many of you know, includes the Blue Ridge Grade. The next day will cover the ever-popular Roanoke-to-Bluefield run. Looks like full details will be posted shortly.
