"Lead state Pennsylvania on Sept. 14 submitted "The Crescent Corridor
Intermodal Freight Application" to apply for federal stimulus money under the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Transportation Investment
Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Program.

"The application seeks $300 million in support of new independent intermodal
facilities at Memphis, Birmingham, and Franklin County, Pa.; and the expansion
of intermodal terminals in Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Track improvements in
the five partner states will include 10 passing tracks, 557 individual speed
improvements, and 393 miles of track improved with upgraded rail."

States supporting the application include Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Illinois also submitted a TIGER grant application for 16 projects which are part of the CREATE group. Three directly affect the NS.

They are:

EW 3 -- Realign Pullman Junction and add crossovers to connect BRC and NS mains from Pullman Junction to 80th Street to EW corridor. $7.6 million requested with a state contribution of $1.7 million and a railroad share of $0.2 million.

GS 3a -- Improve signalization at grade crossing of NS and Morgan Street, Chicago. $0.8 million requested with a state contribution of $0.2 million.

WA 3 -- Replace/install 6 power switches and install connection tracks from CSX to NS to the BNSF main track. $6.9 million requested with $20.9 in federal funds already obligated, a railroad share of $5.2 million.
