Derailment Greensburg, PA

Post by fromway » Fri Nov 08, 2019 5:52 pm

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review has an article about a NS derailment near Greensburg, PA. This is east of Pittsburgh on the Main Line. It looks like a train of containers derailed on one of the tracks and another train pulling Oil Cans came around a bend and ran it to. Engines and cars are shown in pictures in a tangled mess. Everything will have to be switched to the lines that come down the Allegheny River side of the area.

Three trains involved. A rear-ender causing derailment into the side of a passing third train. 9549 and 9659 was the power on the oil cans.

First reaction is to ask if all the shareholders are okay.

WTAE TV in Pittsburgh has aerial video of the wreck. Someone has a lot of explaining to do.

Z7X ran into the rear of 21V, when then derailed into the passing eastbound 20Q. MP 319 Bolivar, PA.
Can anyone verify whether or not PTC is being tested or in actual operation on this line?
Also how many trains are being detoured over the Conemaugh Line?

Don't know about PTC, but that line has had cab signals and speed control for decades. If 27X's power had what they always did have, speed control should have stopped the train with a penalty application or else enforced a speed no greater than 15 mph. One possibility would be crew fatigue. I haven't seen anything about how the crews made out.

PTC was not in service at the time of the wreck (Revenue Service Demonstration rumored to start in February) The line has long been cab signalled and continues to be so; in fact with the installation of PTC equipment NS has been also removing almost all automatic signals on cab signalled lines, and the Pittsburgh Line project was recently completed.. A number of engineers have complained about operating this way and it will be interesting to see if this played a part in this accident. Both tracks of the Pitt Main at MP 319 were reopened overnight as follows: Main 2 at 2209, Main 1 at 0054 ( 11/9 & 11/10, respectively)
