UPDATED: 8:01 pm EST February 21, 2010
MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Melbourne police said a train struck and killed three girls on the Crane Creek trestle bridge Saturday night. Melbourne fire and police departments received phone calls just before 6:30 p.m. reporting that there were young people who had been walking on the bridge and one call reporting that a child had fallen into the creek. Investigation revealed that a boy and three girls had been walking southbound across the bridge, near New Haven and Prospect avenues.

posted another article, that will be gone in a few days, from a temporary news source
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Feb. 21) - Three teenage girls crossing a bridge in central Florida were killed by a freight train as they desperately tried to get out of its way, and their helpless friend on the other side could only watch, police said Sunday. The girls and the fourth teenager, a boy, were hanging out in Melbourne's downtown area -- known for its shops and nightclubs -- when they decided to cross the trestle around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Lt. Curtis Barger said. "The male made it across the tracks, turned around, heard the train, saw it and yelled for them to run," Barger said. "He then told them to jump." The girls did not have enough time.

There are posted "NO TRESPASSING" signs probably every couple of hundred feet along the FEC right of way from end to end,
it is too bad that these people did not adhere to these signs which are placed there for their protection.
My sympathy goes to the crew on train 101 who were simply doing their job and minding their own business and did not
It tied up the railroad for hours while the investigation took place and some of the trains needed relief crews to finish their
trips. It was a miserable night for everybody.

I've heard it said on this website to always expect a train coming on any line no matter what. Even on a rusty old abandoned line. (on an abandoned line, could be the first train in years, the day your nearby) Always expect a train and you will be safe.

For some reason, this story made national news. It's unfortunate that these kids were trespassing on the bridge, and it's unfortunate that the train crew will have to live with that tradgedy for the rest of their lives.
