Even if the CMQ has upgraded their lines to meet FRA Class 2 (25mph), they apparently choose to operate only at 15mph (TRAINS).

Even if Halifax is a further line haul from, say, Montreal , I'd like to think, considering they host a VIA passenger train, their track has a higher speed for freight as well. Halifax further represents one day less "steaming" time to wherever - especially considering the tidal factors at St. John.

Again; railroad and maritime interests are "hand and glove" together.
