New Spur @ Limecrest Andover?

Post by Paul Miller » Fri Dec 06, 2013 9:38 am

Heard through the grapevine that a spur could be rejuvenated into the old Limecrest facility once serviced by the LHR. Braen Stone has apparently taken over operations there and are considering using the rails to ship products. They are supposedly pumping out one of the mines that has since filled in with water. Braen Stone also has an operation off Cork Hill Road in Franklin, along the line of the old Sterling Mine Spur once also serviced by the LHR. No definite dates have been set, but it's possible it may happen in the next year or so. Interesting to note that Thomas Edison at one time owned the facility at Limecrest in the early 1900's, before moving his facility to Warren County.

Potentially, good news...

And it wouldn't be the first association between Braen and the L&HR. In the fifties, the (then) Sam Braen Company had a substantial ready-mix concrete plant located behind the Warwick shops building, and rented the Warwick passenger station for their offices for the Warwick operation. (Everything old is new again?)

didn't know that Marty, but that's why you are the guru ;). Apparently the company itself has been around for several decades according to their website. Sparta area is really booming lately for the old L&H ROW!

Too bad they can not extend the tracks back to Andover--Any potential industry around there?

not really Dave. One distinct possibility- don't know if you're aware of NJ Transit restoring Lackawanna Cutoff to Andover. It's getting real close to happening, (of course we've heard that before) . Would be interesting to see if it does happen. then there's always the possibility of passenger service between the 2. It's a long shot. There was talk in the 1960's of connecting the LHR to the Cutoff at Huntsville for freight.
