NKP "Mars Lights" Question(s)

Post by XC Tower » Fri Jan 01, 2016 4:38 pm

I real these vividly, along with the "click-ding" of the bells, while watching the low speed parade of an approaching freight, many a time, over West 19th St. in Erie on the lead diesel. Were the NKP steam locomotives similarly equipped with them? Also, how long did it take for the N&W remove them all from the ex-NKP units that it inherited?
Thanks in advance.

On the NKP, most of the road power Mikes and Hudsons had mars lights, all the Berks did. Same held true on the Wheeling.

The click-ding was an nice supplement to the high pitch burble of the ALCo prime moves on the PA's. I'll not forget the chime horn of the Bluebirds. A real surprise to hear a PA leading a freight train rather than first class moves.
