Today's New York Times Travel Section has three "positive" rail travel articles. Here are those related to travel in Russia and Peru. A third relating to Amtrak's Coast Startlight is linked at that Forum.

The macchu picchu tourist train sounds a far cry from the "local' i took around 15 years ago . In price and luxury stakes .
I remember it been totally packed , so much so that i was forced to stand in the toilet door for most of the journey .a great dance occurred when a determined (desperate ?)lady decided to use the toilet mid trip . all good humoured , and accepted as the normal conditons i guess .
I have a photo of the train , with the conductor walking along the roof to get from carriage to carriage , in an attempt to gather all the fares .
