Metuchen Freight Operations

Post by nick11a » Wed Apr 19, 2006 3:20 pm

Caught a llot of Metuchen action today.

-ME2 (County Job) had NS 5314 and worked on the Delco Lead today. Arrived back at Metuchen around 3.

-ME10 (Oak Island and back) had a CSX pair of 8857 and 2810 and a lot of cars. Departed heading east from Metuchen at 3:20 (after sitting in the recieving yard for 2+ hours). It was reported that ME10 had the Operation Lifesaver Conrail unit 5290 owned by NS late last week.

-ME18 (Does Cutters on the NJCL, Deans on the Corridor and does some of the NEC work for ME2 at County sometimes as well as ME34 at General Tire and whatnot) had the 5290 today (OLS Conrail). This was a nice surprise. For the past year, they've almost always had the NS black 5285. ME18 is recognizable as they have the Conrail blue 22137 caboose.

I didn't stick around to see what ME34 had today though.

Oh, and anyone know which jobs at Metuchen work the Raritan Center in PA. (Raritan Center accessible by heading out of Metuchen Yard due east towards Perth Amboy and accross Route 1.)

Note to Mod: Umm, if you want, you can make this a sticky as Metuchen freight ops do pop up a fair amount in here. I'm not exactly sure if Metuchen Yard deserves its own Sticky thread, but maybe.

After seeing Amtrak hand off the RBBB Blue Unit circus train on Tuesday, I took a swing by Metuchen in hopes of seeing the ME10.

A friend of mine made the suggestion, so he gets the credit. Plus he was driving. Anyway, as we drove to the station, we saw the ME10 waiting to enter the NEC. We found a place to park close to the station and walked to the station as the ME10 waited. This was shortly after 1:30 p.m.

While we were waiting there, an Amtrak engine move consisting of GP15 575 headed west. (This engine was also seen by us about three hours earlier at North Elizabeth while waiting for the circus train.) After the 1:48 p.m. NJT train departed Metuchen, a local freight went through the station. It was in push mode, had a blue Conrail caboose and CSX GP38-2 2810. It went to the east end of the station, changed tracks and then proceeded to Metuchen Yard. This must've been the ME18.

Shortly after the 2:04 p.m. NJT train departed, the ME10 started rolling forward. The power was PRR GP38-2 5290 (in Conrail OLS paint) and CSX SD40-2 8857 (in YN3 paint). It was definetely a cool sight seeing the OLS unit on the NEC passing through the station. I was glad I was able to see it without waiting too long.

So a quick stop paid off as we saw two freights in about 45 minutes. There's been a few times where I threw in the towel after waiting over an hour to see the ME10 leave.

wish I were on the corridor watching the freight. Next weekend, I might be heading to DC to visit a friend, by train of course. Maybe I will see some.

Funny, that's almost the exact same song and dance I saw on Wednesday- and 575 came through west on 2 at the same time you saw it on Tuesday. The main difference on Wendesday though was ME18 (the local with the caboose) had 5290 and ME10 had 2810 as the second unit.

TODAY: ME18 worked down at Deans on the NEC and came back up to County and went all the way down the Millstone. Had the caboose and 5290. I was also lucky to catch ME2 drilling in cars at Arm and Hammer with 5314.

ME2 came through New Brunswick around noon today, still with 5314 and some box-cars (I think for Johnson and Johnson.) I heard on the scanner that ME18 still had 5290 today, but didn't get a chance to see that train up front today.

Saw ME18 outlawed from yesterday this morning on General Tire. Think they were dropping the crew off there this morning. Had CSX 2810.

I drove past Metuchen Yard on Monday on my way home from South Plainfield. The yard definitely had a CSX flavor to it that day. CSX power present in the yard was GP38-2 2810, SD40-2 8857 (the one working the ME10), GP15-1 1537 and GP15-1 1546. NS GP38-2 5290, in its Conrail Operation Lifesaver Paint was there, coupled to the 1546, elephant style, but both units were long hood forward. All these engines were at the yard office, so I wasn’t expecting anything to leave anytime soon so I kept heading home. This was close to noon. Don’t know if this is all the power currently assigned to the yard or if something was out of the yard working.

Here are 3 shots of CSX #2810(GP38-2) with caboose CR #22137 crossing Whitman Ave. into Metuchen Yard around 5:14 pm. I don't know which ME local this is.

That's ME18 myfav.

And thanks Don! The photo is taken from the Main St. Crossing at the Train Station in Stirling looking west out onto the Stirling Passing Track.
