Abandoned Spur in Lyndhurst NJ at Kingston Station

Post by carajul » Thu Mar 21, 2019 12:42 am

What's the history on the abandoned line that starts at the Kingston, NJ (ex-Erie) NJT station and goes south to Harrison, NJ? Looks like it was 2 tracks. Part of it still goes thru the paved pax platform at Kingston Sta.

That's KINGSLAND , NJ you're talking about. Its a town, not part of Lyndhurst. It is ex-Lackawanna trackage..the Lackawanna diesel mainline thru Boonton.
The Harrison branch connected the with Boonton line with a wye at Kingsland, and ran south to a wye connection to the M&E at Harrison. It was a busy local freight line in the 1970's and previously. There is a little bit of track left and 1 or 2 consignees at the Harrison end. Served by CSX.

The M&E end has 1 customer, served by NS.
The Main Line has 2 customers on the leg of the wye east of the Kingsland station.
The track through Kingsland station hasn't been used in years, unless you count MOW storage.

Kingland is not a town or any other type of legal entity or municipality. Kingsland is an informal name for a portion of Lyndhurst Township in Bergen County, NJ.

Sorry, but Ken is correct. Kingsland is part of Lyndhurst Township.

Your reference calls out several other locales, each of which is part of an existing borough, city or township of Bergen County.

There are no "unincorporated towns" within the county.

"unincorporated" is the legal term for an informal name for a section of a legal entity, i.e., a municipality or county in New Jersey. Unincorporated areas as such can have no government, regulations, laws, ordinances, property, employees, police department, etc. since they are not a municipality or county under NJ State Law. Every area, other than perhaps federal enclaves, in New Jersey is within a specific municipality which has government, etc.

This route was also brought up a few years ago by some Kearny politicians pitching an idea of commuter rail service or light rail returning to Kearny. Obviously the congestion on the M&E and NEC, and the location of this branch made that proposal dead on arrival. I could see this route revived someday as a more active freight spur, hurricane storage, or a MOW route, but the branch is pretty impractical these days for any sort of regular service.
