x-press, You seemed to be making points worthy of consideration right up to your apparent conclusion in the last paragraph re: good trains/bad trains; i.e., let's not analyze which trains are worthy of support, but instead we should throw money at them all. I can't get on board with that. There is ...

Not that I want to sidetrack into a policy discussion but.... I'd prefer that my tax dollars not pay for affluent people's 'minicruises'. This I understand. However, government built/subsidized highways transport limousines right alongside Geo Metros. Air travel subsidies help those traveling first...

(I have yet to see hordes of scanner-toting railfans on any of the long hauls I've made) WAAAY OT here, but on my Auto Train journey last week I DID observe a gentleman, sitting in the Lounge for the "comp" wine-tasting (Naked Mountain this trip) wearing railfan paraphelia (a prominent T-...

GBN, You were up early this morning! Let's talk about corridor vs. LD. Where does corridor stop being corridor and become LD? Is it a function of distance, or of kind of ridership, or of volume of ridership? I haven't ridden 48/49 for a couple of years, but everytime I have it's been full. I don't ...

The $300 price is largely equivalent to any overnight stay in a Northeast city if you consider meal and hotel let alone alternate mode of travel to get to the destination (likely compared to Acela Express First Class, Northeast Regional coach, or airplane and cost to get to airport). I don't disagr...

When we examine the above scenario and study its genesis we realize it’s a product of its time. This pre-war settlement was founded at a time when energy was not as easy to obtain as it is today. Most heat was accomplished by burning coal and air-conditioning was opening a window. The most efficien...

YES , back to Amtrak , as i think fuel use and efficency is about to become alot more important to it . I have started a thread regarding hep power efficenency sometime ago , but there are alot of other areas / questions that need to be discussed . Is funding for amktrak likely to come unstuck when...

Well. as it happens I have a recent comparison between air and rail to discuss. My wife and I just spent a three-day weekend in Charleston, SC. Wonderful food and wine, sunshine, and temperatures in the 70s. It's just a wonderful city. We flew round trip for $302 each. Wheels up to wheels down, the...

should naivete such as NARP's "vision" ever move forth, there will be no appreciable change from the 99%. I highly doubt if the typical family in my affluent Chicago suburb is going to head to Union Station rather than O'Hare (or in some cases, load up and put the DVD's in the SUV's playe...

Let's try to save eight minutes thru Philadelphia-- A NY-Washington train on the new line splits away from the present line at the west bank of the Schuylkill River and curves left on a 0-deg 46.3-minute curve to end up running along Preston St http://tinyurl.com/dmx6ul ; it continues straight acro...

And the bottlenecks north and south of the station are being addressed by the state of Delaware right now (third track "Yard" to "Ragan"; proposed third track "Wine" to "Landlith"; proposed third track "Bell" to "Holly Oak"). Only the &quo...

Well, that explains why it took them a while to get the notice up . . . ! I don't understand why the Palmetto gets the bus bridge treatment and the Carolinian doesn't (with the exception of the days its canceled on the southern portion, too). They could run passengers to Richmond on a combined 79/89...

The title here should be changed to Monday cancellations, not M-F. Perhaps for the Piedmont, but the Carolinian is "out" of the reservation system Monday thru Friday. **Edit: Carolinian is apparently running Rocky Mount-Charlotte. I'm pretty sure it wasn't, before. As such, it will likely...

M-F Carolinian Cancellation for March

I was looking for a business class upgrade for my Baltimore-Charleston (#89 Palmetto) trip next month, and found out that I'll be on a "bus bridge" from Richmond-Rocky Mount (yay, MORE trackwork!). Turns out, I'm the lucky one, unless Amtrak changes their plans for the Carolinian: Monday-F...
