Re: Ridership in Virginia and North Carolina

I've said for years, Atlanta really needs a "day train" from DC, i.e. one that arrives in the evening and departs in the morning. The problem of course is blocking the NS tracks. But honestly, with the right timing, you'd basically be able to leverage the existing staff. Given how popular ...

Trains Magazine has an article on the increased service (but admit don't have all the details yet) That said, it's actually refreshing to see not just an upgrade in service, but a noticeable one! Now, it would be nice if the Empire Service could add a trip or two. For example there's still a gap bet...

I was fully expecting this on my train out of WAS today (88) but they were all (except final row for wheelchair bound travelers) forward facing. Honestly, while I prefer forward facing, I have no issue with rear-facing. Gives me a different look at the world. But it will bother some folks more than ...

Maybe I missed it, but would the 1st Street tunnels need enlarging for catenary?
If they're taking Superliner equipment (and Wikipedia lists their height as 17' which jives with Superliners just barely being able to fit) I would think that gives enough for catenary.

I thought it was a 2 year funding plan and this is an additional year on top of that. That said, I think a) it needs better marketing and b) my be one of those things that Mass might want to keep doing as a way of ultimately building a longer-term goal of more east-west rail and just keeping "r...

Except this is really Mass funding it. Without that, Amtrak would have pretty much zero interest.

Empire Service that extends beyond Albany?
No, all trains (I believe) that extend past Albany have food service. It's only those that start or terminate in Albany that don't have any.

I read that same review this past weekend. The narrow seats do sound a bit problematic to me.

"The Last Mile" Problem

I was going to go hyperlocal on this, but decided to open it up. What prompted this was an email from my local transit agency ( CDTA ) this morning. They are offering a new service: Flex+ . (note over time the Flex+ might drop down from the top of the page). Anyway for $3 (cash is an option) one can...

Depends, what's the problem?

I suspect other parts of the country might disagree with your solution.

In addition, you're comparing "all air boardings" with "Amtrak". That includes your short-haul commercial flights. So, you really should include at commuter rail boardings. Even if you want to set an arbitrary minimum limit (I mean can you really compare a 10 mile rail commute to...

They're eventually going to have to do something.
The question is, who's going to pay for it?

I've been really confused about this coverage, because it makes it sound like the Avelias haven't turned a wheel on the NEC (except perhaps to get to Philly). My understanding is they were doing a lot of testing last year and the year before. Does this current "can start testing on the NEC"...

In fact, I seem to recall a lot of effort to make this route the default one over a decade ago, and I believe Vermont had already done some track improvements. I can definitely see Vermont being interested in this. Not only would Bennington (well North Bennington) get some boost from this, Mancheste...
