...NYP is usually 'go stand in line with the rest of the mob', but they let you know what gate before the mob gets notified, so we're in the front of the line. Have the lounge pre-boarding announcements been automated anywhere? One year, I traveled more often and became aware that at NYP, one espec...

For purposes of these reports, where is the eastern terminus of the Buffalo line? Is the east/west timekeeping difference due in part to the location of the time-padding stop at Albany being at the far-eastern end of the unreliable (CSX) portion of the trip? That is: Albany can be padded to absorb s...

Do they have the same number of rooms to sell? If two or three roomettes were exchanged for the common plumbing, the reservation system would need to know the equipment.

Why the either/or presentation? Does the mgt worry that the potential new (state-supported, I presume) short-haul services would leave the long distance trains without any passengers? Mightn't new riders of the new short-haul trains subsequently turn into new (if occasional) long-distance customers?

Virgin Brightline is a real-estate company that boosts its land value by turning it into a node on a useful transportation network. The Brightline idea relies on a density of developable sites on a transportation network that it can control. Unless Brightline Virgin has its eye on buying CSX and red...

Chicago's Metropolitan Lounge is enormous, big enough for the swell of long-distance passengers transferring from one delay to another. Quite pleasant, overall. There are places near TVs, places near snacks, places on the main level, places upstairs (with elevator), places near great big plate-glass...

superstar has a point. Brightline was a real-estate developer. The trains were perqs to loft the sale price of the condos and offices. It was a magical plan, brilliant in execution, which might yet deliver both public good and private profit. In New York, the closest similar redevelopment opportunit...

There is a theory that the optimal "trainset" would be 6 carriages, including the sandwich bureau. (1) An even number allows the economy of permanent pairs. (2) Corridor offshoot routes like Albany/Buffalo and Springfield need (or currently have) fewer carriages, say 4 on average; run 8 an...

A second-hand bookstore has popped up in Washington Union Station! Actually, it is a book sale for some kind of non-profit; but the books are real. It is located on the shopping mezzanine, in a rather obscure place. Stop by, hand over whatever you finished reading, and pick up something for the next...

How strange to be repairing those canopies! They will be entombed under 10 stories of concrete as Akridge builds his air-rights complex. For the same reason, making more tracks useful augurs well for some level of train service continuing during that construction project. Amtrak will have to realign...

After re-reading some of the news articles, the emergency cord was pulled in the first car, AKA the car that was still attached to the ENGINE. The breaks on the 5 detached coaches worked as intended. People were probably freaking out the engineer would never notice and would bring the train all the...

Presumably, steamrolling the double-decker carriages would also resolve any lingering questions about high platforms or low?
