Re: Privately Run Montreal - New York Overnight Service via CP and Amtrak

Mr. Rebello has been trying the get his overnight service to NYC and to Boston for several years without success. Since nothing has been heard about the Boston line for some time, it is probably dead. The newspaper article says he has $10 million in "private sector" funding so it must be time to try...

Re: Amtrak Empire Service (NYS) Improvements Albany - Buffal

Interesting new connections. At one time, NYSDOT hired a consultant to study expansion of bus service to Amtrak stations. Unfortunately, nothing came of that effort. This seems to be formal coordination of existing Amtrak service with existing Trailways service. The western Amtrak stations see 8 tra...

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

Mr. Norman:

I just tried the link you posted and got the message: "Oops! We cant find the page you want".

The page also said to "Call Julie"

I wonder if Amtrak has bothered to give the menu to agents at staffed stations along the impacted routes.

Re: Anderson changes: Dismantling LD, Corridor, Etc.

I have not seen any Amtrak national ads but here in the Albany, NY media area there are frequent ads promoting the Adirondack route between NYC & Montreal, Canada. It appears that these ads are paid for by New York State. I do not know if other states are using TV to promote their state supported tr...

Mr. DutchRailnut:

Given past "official" statements on the CAF contract, I share your doubt. On June 1 and June 21, we will probable be able to call this "official" statement BS.

Re: Lake Shore Limited

Of interest concerning the Lake Shore is comments by Amtrak speakers at the March 10, 2018 annual meeting of the Empire State Passengers Association. " CAF order will be completed! Last diners will be delivered by Summer. On Lake Shore by June! First sleepers delivered over Summer". The quote is fro...

Re: Viewliner II Delivery/Production

IIRC, Amtrak is paying for the new cars out of current revenue. In view of the recent announcement that the White House plans the cut support of LD trains in the Federal Fiscal Year beginning on October 1, 2017 and the recent Amtrak monthly reports showing capital spending is below planned amounts, ...

Re: Amtrak Empire Service (NYS) Improvements Albany - Buffal

IMHO, I think the MTA is not thrilled with the idea of more Albany to NYC Amtrak service since ridership is growing & weekend service has been added. The first NYS - Amtrak contract under PRIAA cut a Saturday train to NYC & broke a quick connection to trains south of NYC as well as reduced passenger...

Re: September Report

I believe Mr. Moore is correct that Amtrak needs a hundred single level coaches to grow ridership. In fact, the pent-up demand for expanded and new service suggests the need is already here. For example, NYS has asked for an expansion of the Empire Service coach pool from 62 to 68 for 2 years which ...

Re: Neighborhood around Schenectady Amtrak station

The Schenectady Amtrak station is a half block south of the downtown business/entertainment district. While the station is no Penn Station it is going to be rebuilt in the next two years. The area is safe and often busy when the Proctor's theater complex ( a block and a half from the station) is hos...

Re: UPDATE: FRA issues proposed rules on bidding out LD Rout

If I recall correctly, this is the third time since the 2008 PRIIA law that such rules have been proposed. Earlier attempts have drawn no bidders. I suspect this effort will not be different. If any company is interested, the freight railroads will block the effort.

Re: Amtrak Vermonter (Montrealer Amherst Boston CT River Lin

The Vermonter bike "experiment" is a start, but IMHO a poor start. I doubt it will produce the "Visit Vermont" result hoped for by the Tourist Agency with only 21 slots a week. Using one of the new baggage cars would have provided better bike service and produced added revenue from pallet load merch...

The Empire State Passengers Association has posted pictures of the CAF cars going to Albany. Pictures should be viewable at:

The cars are a diner, a sleeper and a baggage-dorm.
