Don't know the history, but there are generally 2 maximum speeds in North America for rail transit, either 50-55mph or 70-75mph. The 70-75mph is usually for subway type for those systems willing to have extra maintenance and energy costs or have very long runs. Braking effort is specified generally ...
50-55 mph is a common limit.
MBTA PCCs currently are around 1944-1945 and were commonly known as wartime cars.
The 1963 cars on the Red Line were crappy to begin with and I was glad to see them go. But the 1800's are nice cars that I wish would be overhauled and kept in-service for the foreseeable future. Plus it is a historic vehicle, the only body style of that type ever built. It was ...

The Hawkers on the Orange and Blue originally ran at 50mph, but were speed governed to 40mph because of braking problems. Don't know how fast the Siemens are allowed to run or the CRRCs.
Red line max is 50mph, when it first opened to Quincy 70mph was the norm only on that branch. Green line in the past was 50mph on Riverside, but cars are now governed to 40mph.
The 01800s have GE propulsion electronics and parts are not readily available, especially since GE has left the transit field. This was another reason to replace the entire Red Line fleet.
