What do you mean safe? it is as long as you watch yourself (lol). North 8th st is good, Rose Yard Office is good spot to see trains, see the locals working the yard & crew changes there. Brickyard (west of 17th st) is good spot too. Sorry for the late response.. I live 25mins from Altoona.

Trains can also get helpers on or off at ConPit.. Helpers that go to Pittsburgh on westbound trains will return on east bounds (coal trains) to help over the grade at Greensburg, PA. No coal train going east or west can go over the mtns without helpers at both areas. Cresson is where Head-End helper...

NS interchanges there with Lehigh Railway, runs trains north to Ithaca, and whatever GE Railcar gets. Almost a wonder the Ithaca line hasn't gone to Lehigh yet, if the power plant goes to gas all that would be left is the salt mine. FWIW, the line along the lake would be about the best dinner/sceni...

PRR>PC Elmira Branch. Sadly the only sections left of the line south of Elmira after Agnes was a small section of line from Elmira Yard to Chapel Lumber. CR derail 1 time in the 80s & that was the end of that section of the old Elmira Branch.
