You'd want to design a whole new body though. The MBTA Green Line has the tightest, most constrained loading gauge of any US light rail system due to it's streetcar legacy. Running cars that small on Baltimore's light rail (which it's HUGE loading gauge) would be a capacity loss. You may be right. ...

Amtrak locomotives pulling commuter rail trains, roughly winter or summer of 1997 obscure enough? I have a nice picture of one at Roslindale Village station. Wasn't Amtrak the contracted operator at the time? Heres another, Not too many years later, during an equipment problem, there was nothing in...

Anderson is just a passing siding, off of the inbound track.

A gauntlet track actually has two sets of rails interlaced, so that only one set can be used at a time (successfully, at least).

Auburndale would most definitely need to move east onto straight track to be converted to high-level. Also possible the other stations might shift a bit to accommodate larger high-level platforms. All in all not a bad thing, as in some cases the old station may be able to remain in service while the...

T'lerts over the weekend are updating and continuing the message of Fitchburg service terminating at Shirley until further notice.

One news report late last week was hinting that the T and Keolis may try to get service running at least as far as North Leominster soon, but no timeline for that.

Those shuttle buses are no doubt coming at a high price. Based on the service recoveries elsewhere this summer, Keolis and the MBTA have been pretty quick to get lines back open. This washout at North Leominster is in a tough spot - as everyone's probably seen by now, the washout basically went thro...

Newton Corner is drowning in traffic. A far better solution would be to just fix the bus routes - run better service before we start pouring the wrong kind of concrete. The MassPike scar and Circle of Death aside, everything is quite walkable. Now that the 71 has been misguidedly de-wired, there's n...

The land to the north of the railroad is more or less all higher up, and sloping down towards the Nashua River. The railroad (aside from the Route 13 bridge) acts like a berm interrupting that natural slope down to the river. Not surprising there were issues given how much water must have been tryin...

On the LIRR, does anyone check to see that you have an activated ticket before boarding? Very little experience on the LIRR, but I've used the mTicket on the MBTA commuter rail, and sure, they tell you over and over again that you MUST activate before boarding. But unless there's a rare platform che...

Haverhill Line looks like it's out of commission RR east of Andover this afternoon. All service terminating at Andover, busing beyond, and at least one trainset stuck in Haverhill. Saw some internet reports of one or more washouts/slides on the line.

Looks like they're probably basing three trainsets at Wachusett based on the timetables. You can usually make a rough guess by looking at the morning schedules. Weekdays, 400, 402, and 404 all depart before the first outbound (401) arrives, so they'd need those three to come from the layover yard. S...

I wouldn't be too admiring of the MBTA commuter rail fare structure. They've recently (due to relentless political pressure from communities on the Fairmont Line) pushed more Boston stations into zone 1A (equivalent to a subway fare), but: -There's still 5 stations in the southwestern neighborhoods ...
