Re: Main Line Crossing (Almost) Eliminations

Does anyone here live along that corridor? Can you confirm if the walls make a real difference? I'm in "Fence Territory" so I can't say for sure. I did date a girl years back who lived near the "walled" Long Island Expressway, and I don't remember whether or not they made a diff...

I will say that it was a bit windy for this time of year throughout the week. So one of my first thoughts was maybe some kind of trash had blown around and gotten lodged in one of the switches?

I had to ride the mainline in and out of work a few times this past week, and watched the aftermath in progress. Starting with my commute home Thursday, we rode right next to the train. All 8 of the M7's looked in really bad shape underneath - a lot of the wheels, trucks, third rail shoes, and strut...

Now that you mentioned it, yes, that's about where I noticed the other concrete planks in the tracks.

For those interested, this is another angle of the mansion gates in NHP, taken from 3rd Avenue.

That actually kind of makes sense, I didn't think of that purpose. (i.e. something on a truck with too high a clearance for any of the new underpasses) In extreme emergencies or pre arranged conditions when a movement can’t cross under lirr at NHP, I guess that crossings can be opened and used under...

Allow me to clarify, I know quite well they were all closed to the public as part of the project. That wasn't in question.

I was just curious about the remnants seen along the way, as well as the NHP setup.

Main Line Crossing (Almost) Eliminations

I've been riding the newly expanded main line a lot lately, and in seeing the completed project in all its glory, I noticed that some of the eliminated crossings along the way are only partially removed. I saw one or two in Westbury, one in Mineola, and, most curiously, one in New Hyde Park. The Wes...

No More "Grraaand Central"

While riding earlier today, I noted they finally switched out the subway recording for the Grand Central announcement, getting the original guy back to record it in a more consistent tone with the rest of the LIRR library. Though I have to admit, that was quite the wake-up call on an early morning c...

Belmont Park Track Work

Passed by the area on a train today, and noticed the Belmont Park spur is getting some work done. The east leg of the wye has been fully rehabbed and the west leg has the track and 3rd rail completely ripped up. Apologies if this was covered in the massive thread(s) relating to the new Elmont statio...

Found this when my girlfriend was cleaning out some old family photos. She said "this must be from California" but I immediately recognized the "rust bucket" cars. Any idea where this location could be?

Dead M3's on Hempstead Branch?

While heading out to do some shopping yesterday morning, I caught a quick glimpse of what seemed like a bunch of M3's being pulled by an LIRR switcher across the Covert Ave crossing on the Hempstead Branch going eastward. Couldn't get out the phone camera quick enough though!

Man oh man... Just thinking of this takes me back to hanging around the Islip station as a kid. I can hear in my head right now - the awesome sequence of sounds made by the GP's as they moved up from idle to cruising speed leaving the station!

Steve, Thanks, direct south of M2 at the same location, Saxon. There’s a bumper block in the under brush and some track maybe 2 cars. Appears to be a box car industry unless the building was built later on. This switch might have lasted into the MTA. I grew up near that crossing, so I can offer som...

Old Rockaway Beach Relics Removed In Forest Park

I was walking around Forest Park the other day like I'd done for a few years now, and happened to notice while crossing over "The Rock" near the football fields/track, that a lot of the old classic wire towers along the line were removed within the park boundaries. At least as far I was ab...
