Re: M&E Capacity Improvements (Dreams, Not Reality)

It’s actually a two level bridge with 3 if not 4 tracks... so just reconnect the leads and rehab the lower level and viola!

Just kidding of course but I’ve always wonder if that lower level could be used somehow.

Re: Penn Station Renovation & Expansion & Moynihan Station

There's nothing for Amtrak to move into at this point. The West End concourse is simply a slight expansion of access points on the western end of the existing station. Passengers will now be able to leave track level on tracks 5-12 on the west side where they couldn't before and to exit the station ...

Funny how everything is still "eggs in one basket" when it comes to travel to Manhattan; only the existing stations can be considered. Never any consideration for tunneling from Hoboken East End into downtown (plenty of need for redevelopment in the Houston Street area), from any of the p...

Was just through there last week. Some of the work is done and is open -- meaning the widening of the existing west end LIRR concourse which is part of the project but it was clear the work is still underway. I did not observe the exterior entrances so I'm not sure if those are open.

The closest parallels would be LIRR's Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica. Are those ghost towns? No. One is used mostly as a transfer facility and the other is a quicker way to reach Lower Manhattan. Hoboken will be fine as a lesser used but still important station. Harder to keep relevant in the future...

Why does the new tunnel swing south so much? That is adding to its length. The original ARC alignment looped that way because it had to get deep enough to go under the existing Hudson River tunnels. It may be that when they built the tunnel box below the new Hudson Yards project the only thing they...

I forgot to add.....the crew was the usual guys working the 9 car MLV....So maybe it wasn't that. Gladstone not being able to take 2 9 car MLVs is very plausible...maybe that's what it was. That is the reason [/u][/i]. There's no "maybe" about it. I don't know why srock still chooses to w...

So we get off and wait on the FREEZING platform at Newark when we are informed that the MTD train is now running 6 minutes late. Please. There is no shortage of indoor space at Newark Broad. Was remarking on the weather conditions during my commute not the availability of indoor space at the statio...

Also... why would the south Portal bridge cost $700 million more than the north one since I would bet they will be identical. I know there was a time when the south bridge was going to be a swing bridge but why bother with that?

And... the Sawtooth bridge doesn't cross the Passaic River.

To add insult to injury, the night after the incident above, the 6:04 from Hoboken itself died.

After waiting about ten minutes we were told to walk over to track 16 where another Arrow pulled in and we left about 25 minutes late.

Fortunately that night there was no detour at Broad Street.

A couple of reactions: I would hope that NJ Transit would be brought into the process too since you can't fix what's wrong with Penn Station without including that half of the station. Which leads me to wonder why if you are closing 33rd street you wouldn't close 31st street too and do the same kind...

I had the good fortune to enjoy that ride as well and will add this... We are approaching Newark Broad Street on the delayed 6:04pm when the conductor suggests that anyone heading to Summit or beyond on the Morristown line get off and change to the MTD which was scheduled to arrive at 6:41pm. Park at Secaucus. You can get to either Hoboken or Midtown from there.
