Re: Gateway without the Secaucus loop

There is no dispute that the Oradell siding will not get built. However telling people to take the bus into the city is not going to get Gateway without the Secaucus Loop support from Bergen County. Bergen County is very influential in NJ politics as it should be given its size. If you do not have t...

I will add a little to the speculation about the cables, but I warn you that I am not involved in the design and probably I am not aware of all the considerations that go into it. The Channel Tunnel has its cables racked on the wall without encasement. I have not tried to look up the voltage, but pr...

The secaucus loop needs to happen regardless. Orange and rockland counties absolutely need a direct one seat ride into manhattan. Why are they "special" compared to all other riders wanting access to NYC??? To continue MattW's thought. Why are not the Orange and Rockland counties special?...

I worry that this will turn into another Portal North situation, but I guess that's better than doing absolutely nothing. The way this is proposed it definitely seems that it is meant to have Phase I completed and Phase II abandoned unless the money for Portal South and the Gateway Tunnels is found...

Trump administration deals another blow to Gateway Tunnel https://www.nj.com/politics/2020/03/trump-administration-deals-another-blow-to-gateway-tunnel.html You posted before I did. Gateway is done for the next 5 or so years. By then barring a recession, the opportunity to build the tunnel box betw...

Signal Issues

Once in a while "signal issues" means something unexpected, specifically running a stop signal.

The incident, which resulted in 60-minute delays for homebound commuters from Penn Station New York was due to a “a stop signal violation” said Jim Smith, an NJ Transit spokesman.

Perhaps the RFI could be used as leverage in getting an extension on the MBB lease if there are no spare cars to be found anywhere? (“We looked and there’s nothing available and we can’t replace the trains with buses!”) That is actually a great point. Given that the Hartford Line actually ends in M...

Article doesn't say if this repair work is magically happening with the tunnels still in use, or will NJT trains be annulled... EDIT: Other articles 'splain that yes, magical in-use repair only requires "night & weekend outage". What hours are these tunnels below 50% capacity that one...

135mph on both sides? Newark Penn and Dock Bridge are on one side (Hudson interlocking is also there). Swift interlocking is on the other side. I do not have the current speed limits for the area, but I cannot imagine the speed limit being higher than 90mph. Maybe someone with more knowledge could c...

How about, during said major reconstruction, NJDOT builds in room for a new railroad in Paterson? The state doesn’t actually need to lay ties and rail, just create a box for the first taker. Sell the rights to the Cutoff and said Garrett Mountain Grade as a package deal for $1, property tax to be r...

Supposedly there is a DEIS for Sawtooth Bridge replacement coming out soon . The Federal Railroad Administration will release an environmental assessment for the replacement of the Sawtooth Bridges in northern New Jersey in the near future, which is a "key chokepoint for the northeast corridor,...

Chao wants to fix the existing tunnels first . Chao told lawmakers that repairs should begin on the existing tunnel "while we are preparing for the second tunnel." "Beginning rehab work in the near-term is the right move, not waiting years for the construction of a new tunnel beforeha...

I don't think the situation is as dire as you make it out to be. Did you read the RFI? It's due tomorrow afternoon and they want cars on the property before April 30, 2020. I did read it and that is why I think there is no chance that any operable car will be made available on the property by April...

It really sounds as if bus-titution for years coupled with reduced schedule and crowding is coming to the Hartford Line. One really has to ponder whether CDOT shouldn't just have ordered a small fleet of NJT or MBTA bilevels when the Hartford line first began operation. By now such an order would ha...
