Re: Acela II (Avelia Liberty): Design, Production, Delivery, Acceptance

Riding backwards is diffrent and new, which is all it takes in this forum to be denounced as a plot against customers, despite global (and commuter) acceptance. I predict it will be a non issue with customers (as it has for Brightline) and a clear win for mechanical and operational simplicity. I ag...

Re: Switch Position Indicator Pilot Program

solar power, cloud, celluar...I'm amazed they didn't manage to get block chain into there, and internet of things.

What's wrong with a stupid limit switch and wires and a light a few hundred feet away, again?

Re: Amtrak Empire Service (New York State)

In a restaurant setting, often the most frustrating customers are the ones who finish ordering then say, “oh, did I say I wanted that to be vegan? I’m so sorry! Does that ever actually happen? Typically, vegans can never shut up about being vegan, and it's generally the first or second thing out of...

They also have lost favor with just about every transit agency in the east, save for NJT. The NY MTA won't touch them at all, now, after the R-179 fiasco.

Re: Why do trains spend so long stopped in Washington?

They take forever because they can. Who is holding them accountable for taking forever? Nobody. There is no check and balance. Power change at Bad Bentheim. NS locomotive on 1.5kv DC to a DB locomotive on 15kv AC. Including changing the voltages in the overhead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-Az...

Re: Why do trains spend so long stopped in Washington?

They do it faster in Europe, where they have HEP, safety rules, unions, etc. And oh yes, sometimes a catenary voltage changes as the power gets moved about.

Re: Amtrak Branding NEC: Acela, Metroliner, Regional

Nasadowsk: because MSP is hell for reasonable airfare. :P Surprised you couldn’t get a BWI connecting flight at least though, or one of the Deltas to JFK or LGA. MSP is hell, period. At least LGA is small and located somewhere interesting. But, I live in NJ, thus going in/out of EWR is easier. I've...

Re: Possible Acela branding change

The airlines are not going to be looking forward to trying to compete with this. This service offerring could fundamentally end business travel by air between Washington and New York. Ironically, I'll be flying from IAD to EWR this friday night, but I'll be connecting from a MSP flight. The choices...

“We can neither confirm nor deny......”

That’s the best your top media relations guy can say about a federal embezzlement investigation? Why am I not surprised?
To be fair, the feds might have told SEPTA to be quiet. Admitting there's an investigation could affect the outcome...

Re: All Things Portal Bridge: Amtrak and NJT Status and Replacement Discussion

1. 12.5 Kv is close enough to 12 Kv that there will not need any rebuilding of overpasses and bridges as the present Amtrak system can take the slightly higher voltage. Remember the PRR CAT has already been thru 2 voltage increases. 11.0 Kv to 11.5 Kv by PRR late 1940s and 11.5 Kv to 12.0 Kv by Amt...

Re: Virgin Rail née Brightline/AAF Orlando - Miami FL FEC

About becoming "FEC Tri-Rail"; remember every stop will add three minutes to the schedule. This factors in how overpowered (two SC-44, 8000hp) are the four car trains. Overpowered? Sounds more like they're just using a more European method of putting power onto the train. SBB puts about as much (el...

Re: Railway Age Article on Penn Station

So why can't we turn the 20 or so per hour NJT trains on tracks 1-4 only? Because NJT's rail operations are notoriously sloppy? Because if they did turn 20 trains an hour on 4 tracks, the arguments for ARC would have evaporated in a heartbeat? Because it's easier to scream "MOAR MONEY!!!" than it i...

Re: Quad Gates for HSR

No driver judgment has ever been written into the laws. You can't run red lights on any street, ever, no way, no how. It is the hardest rule of the road. There is absolutely no interpretation in red lights. A few states have laws that allow you to legally run a red light after stopping. Typically f...

I'm not sure about how common dorm space for crew is on Airplanes either.
Some widebodies have crew rest areas on them. Typically for long haul flights where the flight crew is swapped out partly through the flight.

Re: Penn Station turnaround for Empire Connection?

Th e comparison to Europe, which is basically one set of infrastructure, is not apt. One set? Swiss trains have to change power at the German border, because neither country can agree on a pantograph type (even though they're the same voltage/frequency). Nevermind situations like France (two incomp...
