Re: CP RAIL FP7 #4070

Here she is in commuter service at Dorval on a crystal clear cold day in Feb 1978. Hope this works, I've had mixed luck with uploading photos.

Re: Mileposts question.

Regarding the elevation of tracks through Cobleskill, the Cobleskill Water Department has extensive photo coverage of this project from the late 1930s. The local newspaper has run several photos from this collection over the years. One interesting observation is that the ground elevation around the ...

Re: Esperance detector now CP identity. End of D&H

Yeah, and the new one doesn't say which direction the train's going, either. Now I have to guess whether it's worth going down to Howe's Cave to chase.

Re: CSX Mohawk river bridge at Hoffmans, NY

Thanks much for the info.

Any word on why this phase took so long? The western span has been sitting on those pedestals all summer. Did it really take this long to repair the Irene damage, or did Canal Corp insist on waiting until Labor Day?

Is this the Barnerville station?

I've been looking through Taibi's excellent new D&H book, which includes a photo and some notes on the former Barnerville station. Evidently built by the locals, since the RR didn't really want a station there. It got me thinking--is it still in existence? There's a suspicious building right down th...

Re: Cherry Valley Branch questions

These have been run through Photoshop Elements, contrast-corrected,cropped and redresized to 1000 pixel maximum dimensions, then "Saved for Web" to get below the 400K size limit. That works well for display on my screen and for posting on sites like Trainorders, but not so well here. Will post them ...

Re: Cherry Valley Branch questions

Here's how coal got in. Boy, these are coming out big! I have several more detail pix scanned from the negs, let me know if you're interested. I could email them direct or post them here if so desired. Originals are Plus-X negs shot on my way over to chase the CNY in Rivhfield springs, circa 1978. C...

Re: Selkirk-Amsterdam

A few more: Cobblestone Road, a few miles west of Voorheesville, is probably the best, and best-known railfan hangout on the Selkirk Branch. The location is just east of the Voorheesville industrial park. The two mains are separated here by a hundred feet or so, and there are good photo angles avail...

Help is on the way!!

Improved pedestrian access from the Poughkeepsie side is on its way. Work is set to begin in the next few months on an elevator, to be built on the south side of the bridge a few hundred feet in from the shoreline. It will be easy walking distance from the MNCR station and the associated parking gar...

Re: Adirondack Scenic Railroad (ADIX) Discussion - 2012

I have a foot in both camps, so it pains me to read the way this thread has developed. I love trains, my family loves trains, and we ride tourist RRs all the time (4 round trips, totalling 15 tickets, on the ADIX since 2000 or so). We also love bike trails, especially rail trails, and use them all t...

Re: Suburban Propane - Chili

You may be looking at the consequences of Marcellus shale drilling in Pennsylvania. For years, most of the propane sold in the northeastern US has come either from Canada or the southwestern US. Much of that was hauled by rail, because of the distances involved. Well, things have been changing. A lo...

Re: Cherry Valley Branch questions

If you're serious about compiling photos of the remains of the Cherry Valley branch, contact me off list. I shot some B/W pix in the 1970s in Cherry Valley, including the coaling tower which was still standing at the time. You should also be aware of a brief article that ran in the Schoharie County ...

Re: Rochester Amtrak casualty

I certainly don't want to feed the American litigation machine any more than the next guy, and my gut sympathy is with the conductor and crew. But there are a few questions that need to be answered before I let the crew off entirely. First, did this guy still have luggage on the train? Seems to me t...
