CR hits tractor/trailer, Franklin line

Postby StefanW » Mon Oct 23, 2006 8:37 am

Just heard this on WBZ radio, and it's on WCVB site:

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/10135116/detail.html

At least 12 commuters were injured in a rail accident on the Franklin line inbound early Monday.
The incident occurred in the area of Haywood and Fisher Streets. Officials said a train hit a vehicle.
The injuries were said to be minor.
Authorities were investigating the cause of the accident.

I also saw it on CBS4Boston, I wonder which direction it was going. whether it was outbounhd or inbound, since this could be a HUGE difference between The engine or Control Coach.

WBZ radio just updated the story at 9:01 AM...

They said the engineer went into full emergency but couldn't fully stop before hitting a flatbed tractor/trailer at the crossing. The injuries to passengers were apparently from a "bucket" that flew off the flatbed trailer and struck the front car of the train.

WBZ also reported that the flatbed tractor/trailer was pushed by the train into an SUV at or near the crossing.

Sounds like quite a mess...

WBZ radio reported at 9:31 that the accident happened just before 8:00, so I think it's certain that it was #710 the 7:45 inbound.

The live report from the on-scene WBZ reporter said the front car was off the tracks from the impact and leaning at a 45 degree angle to one side.

She said there was "half" of the tractor/trailer on one side of the train and "half" on the other, but she didn't say whether the trailer was broken in two or if the tractor / cab had just split from the trailer...

WBZ radio reported at 10:01 that the truck trailer was a low-bed flatbed (no surprises there) and it got wedged on the raised crossing.

They said the truck driver had run down the tracks to try and warn the oncoming train.

So will Channel 7 tonight reprise their "Coffin Car" report of last year, and say, "We told you so!"?

I just made a few phone calls, and I am told that the engineer is okay. But that's just through the grapevine. I will update when I know more.

The entire train is now scheduled to arrive at BET around midnight tonight, where they'll cut the control car off and inspect the rest of the train for problems.

My guess (which is shared by a few other people) is that the damaged car is going to wind up on the siding next to the Fitchburg line opposite BET and wait a long time for repairs.

So if people want to see it, I guess they can wait along the Grand Junction in Cambridge tonight.

Just got back from the scene:By the looks of the car the coach picked the low trailer derailing the car on its side and being hit by the truck no major impact damage to the front cab. K car 1710 was the car. There is cosmetic damage to where the truck hit the car on the side but unkn the damage to the bottom of the car the lower berth where people sit. Bernie did you go to the incident? Talkin to the PD unkn if they are going to charge the driver of the TT for equipment failure. The rig is impounded by the State Police as we speak the TRUCK team is going over every inch of the cab too. Cant wait to see the outcome.
