Ten years, 27,000km: China celebrates a decade of high-speed
China had some celebrations on August 1 to mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of China's first line designed for more than 250 km/s of speed: the 118-km Beijing - Tianjin line.

By the end of 2017, China's high-speed trackage reached 25,000 km, with 3,500 km more scheduled to open this year, and with the total length to reach 38,000 km in 2025.

By passenger-km, China's high-speed trains carry twice as many passengers as all other eastern-Asia ones and all European ones carry.

Some edifice complex? Maybe. But it beats building ghost cities.
