Digital Model Railroading?

Are any of you familiar with TRAVIC? (http://tracker.geops.ch/?z=10&s=1&x=-82 ... =transport)

TRAVIC (transit visualization client) is a mapping client that represents the movement of transit vehicles mostly based on GTFS Data (the data feeds that inform google maps), showing buses/trains/ferries moving both in real time and when desired.

I've been thinking it would be a neat project to convert an old Official Guide into a machine-readable format such as GTFS and visualize the results in a similar way.

Beyond the work involved in transcribing, it would include acquiring or constructing shapes-files of old routes and station coordinates
