On one hand they constantly complain about wasteful spending at Metro, but they're going to rejoice that Metro is now going to pay a company to haul away 192 cars that we spent hundreds of millions dollars engineering out all of design flaws over the past 5 years, and easily have 15-20 years left on the car bodies. Rejoice? I know Knorr-Bemse and Ametek are certainly rejoicing with the size of the contracts we let for them to overhaul and redesign the HVAC and propulsion systems.

Too bad Metro couldn't find another use for them. As you know, they were purchased with federal funds and so Metro had to get permission from the Feds to retire them early. In 2019, Metro will send them to the scrap yard. I don't know if doing the mid-life overhaul would make them more reliable. Metro chose to use the money to buy more 7000 series cars instead of rehabbing the 5000 series. The 4000 series were 27 years old when they got retired and the 2000/3000 series will be 40 years old by the time they get retired.

Interesting. Metro had previously said that the 5000 series would be retired by the end of October then they posted a tweet on Friday that it would be the last day the 5000 series were in service
