Anyone know the plans for the recently retired NS 2881,2883 and 2884?
they are former Lehigh Valley units, and im trying to keep track of them for the LV Survivors page..

on the "old railroad.net" someone said they were stored at Enola.
any new news?

Most likely the units will be put in storage, just as most of the older
former Conrail units NS just retired. You kind of figure out what will happen since the
GP38-2 rebuilds are complete. Maybe someone else knows more information.

2883 is currently stored at the Roanoke, VA shops.

2884 has been stored at Debutts Yard for a long time , here is a photo from 2003.

How can we, as railfans, keep track of locomotives like these?
If they were sold for scrap, how would anyone ever know? :(
unless someone happens to see them being hauled away,,which is a long shot.
Is there some kind of "master list" that someone keeps of locomotive dispositions?
im afraid my three LVRR GP38AC's will just quietly disappear, and no one will ever even know.

anyone know if there is a way to keep track of dispositions?

I'm surprised that any GP38, GP38AC, or GP38-2 would ever be scrapped. These units are in high demand by short lines as the ideal locomotive unit.

If the 2884 in the picture is in storage at that time, I could not tell one
way or another, it does not seem to be stored with any particular care
with the doors and windows open etc.
Usually when a diesel locomotive is put into storage, preparations take a
little bit of time and work and nothing in the picture indicates that any of
the necessary preparations have taken place at least as far as this
particular unit is concerned.
I can's see any of these engines being scrapped if they have not suffered
from major damage as again good power for yard and local freight trains
and for medium and short line railroads. They are an excellent all round
engine for places where high speed operation is not necessary.

I agree, 2884 is clearly not in storage in that photo..
if in storage, it would closed up, and in a deadline with other units.
I think that NSrayman probably meant:

2884 has been stored at Debutts Yard for a long time , and here is a photo from 2003. (when the unit was still active)

that photo was probably taken just before retirement..
there are leaves on the trees in the background..probably summer.

the units were retired in November '03, so most of 2003 they were still active.

On occasion, Railpace, Extra 2200 South or CTC Board will report the scrapping of a GP38. It is rare, and I'd be willing to bet something catastrophic (e.g. fire or major collision damage) made the necessary repairs too expensive.

I do hope these ex-LV units find a home on a shortline or regional, preferably in NY or PA! :-)

actually no, not wrecked and scrapped! :-D
quite the opposite!

2882 isnt on the "stored" list because it is the only unit of the four LV units to go through the NS rebuilding program and emerge classified as a GP38-2!

Now NS 5516.

Went through NS GP38 rebuild program and re-numbered 5516
in early 2003. is now classified as a GP38-2.

she was in Corning a few months ago! :P

I wonder..since was "in the neighboorhood"..did she pass through Waverly? or even into Sayre?
5516 is the LAST LV locomotive that has any chance of running through Sayre in service..

(well..in theory I suppose the LV GP38-2's could as well..(with CP) but that is unlikely..would take something like a flood or something to reroute a CP train..)
