Sunnyside Hump

Can anyone elaborate on the hump in Sunnyside? I know there is a picture there in Scala's "Diesels of the Sunrise Trail" showing an SW-1001 working it. The history, configuration, when it ceased to be used, what became of it, etc? Any pictures you care to share, too. Thanks in advance.

The hump was bulldozed before the East Side Access Project, and as you can see in the picture, was just to the north of the Sunnyside Engine House.

Late 1980's was the last time the hump was used, and Yard A was flat switched on the east end (and the track was bad) or used the Montauk Cut-Off on the west end as an incline to sort and kick cars cars.

Interesting to note that the signal visible in the photo is a tri-light tricolor signal, rather than a PRR style position light signal.

Don't know about this specific hump, but a typical arrangement would be Green: shove at normal humping speed; Yellow: shove at slower than normal speed; Red: stop shoving. Both signals would normally display the same indication, the farther one needed when shoving a long cut, with the engineer out of sight of the one at the hump. The signals would be controlled by the hump conductor from a fixed position where he could see the action -- often a tower in large yards.

Thank you. I had received word that it is perhaps: :...I've read it was green to shove over hump, yellow to stop, red to
reverse..."

Not sure where that signal was controlled from, but there was a small shed type building just next to honeywell ave bridge with a decent view of both the hump and yard. Would this have been where it was controlled?

I'm not familiar with the location, but it would be a likely place, particularly in the absence of a North Platte-style ivory tower.

Dogbert is indicating Emery location #2: Switchman's Cabin near Honeywell Ave and just west of Emery #6----#6 Telltales :-)
