New cars are on order, and are supposed to start arriving next year or so, trickling in over five years.

Uh, not so much. Bids were due just a few days ago. It will take months, if not more, to award a contract. As I recall the MBTA said the first new Orange Line cars would go into service (after testing) in 2018 at best.

I saw the incident results at about 5:40 AM when I came in on the Elm St bus.

From what my source says the offending car was 01214 in the middle set, 01268/69 was the lead set and 01254/55 the trailing set. It went on the ground about 2 AM at low speed so car damage was minimal. But all of the morning rush pull outs were out of the southern end of Wellington Yard. The crews looked nervous on the southern end pull outs lest something go wrong and fully pooch the morning rush.

Not to mention this pretty much has nothing to do with the cars or their age. At best, it would be wheels, if they were in need of truing or were damaged, resulting in picking/splitting. Or, it was the switch itself.

I wonder if any of those Orange Line cars involved on the mishap will be permanently retired. or unless they can restore them to service

No major damage so they are or will be back. At present they are running tight with the equipment they have so they wouldn't be fast to retire on a minor incident.

I assume all 120 cars delivered in 1980 are still on active roster?
Since my friend continues to chain smoke nonstop, she is probably an Alco.
